Allegory, Violence, and Literature in Our Time
Allegory, Violence, and Literature in our Time
Supriya Chaudhuri
Abstract
The resurgence of theoretical interest in allegory, whether as symbolic mode or as literary genre, has also prompted enquiry into the conditions under which allegory becomes a necessary form of expression. What kinds of meaning are produced by allegory, and what is its relation to time and to history? This presentation begins by looking at a little-known Bengali allegorical poem from the 19th century, described by its publisher as a sāj-rūpak kābya, with the claim there was no exact equivalent in either Bengali or Sanskrit for the term “allegory.” It goes on to examine the allegorical impulse in the literature of our m...

গায়ত্রী চক্রবর্তী (gayatri chakravorty) is pronounced as gaĕòttri t͡ʃɔkkròbòr(t)ti. please pronounce correctly.
Is it a requirement after reading Derrida to dress like you’re in a stage production of The Matrix?
Who are you? Do you REALLY know that?
With transcription, the small problematic is solved Thank you for this so interesting video. Poussin, so grand!
Still very valuable
Very Interesting video, very poor sound. What a pity!
Mr. Moderator and others, please, please do not read from the prepared text. Instead, curculate it to the audience while sharing a link to the document for the global readers. This way, you don't make murderous mistakes of names of scholars in your speech.
Thank you for this informative and fascinating discussion. I have been interested in Fragile X since 1989 when my husband and his mother were “tested” for this at Rutgers University because his brother is autistic. The results were extremely confusing as not only my brother-in-law but my husband and mother-in-law tested “positive “ although neither are autistic. We were subsequently told the results were a “false positive” and went on to have four children, one who is now a PHD like his grandmother who was diagnosed with mild ADHD as a child and one with mild anxiety. Interestingly, my husband, his mother and two of our children, (one now a physician and one a piano prodigy), have very high IQ’s. I can see the negative issues that tend to run in Fragile X families but I see some positive traits as well.
I really hope these students aren't going into loads of debt to learn this nonsense
Not dx but I have quite a lot in common with Carol from the story. I hated my father at times growing up because he was so horrible to be around. He never gave any positive encouragement or tried to help me succeed in any way as a child, but was angry & critical most of the time, mixed with just straight ignoring me and contempt. He was a minister and was very benevolent to others out in the community, so I found the contrast hard to tolerate. Later in life he developed Parkinson’s Disease like his father had. I found it hard to have a lot of sympathy for him because of his treatment of me while I grew up. I had three children two with autism and one with adhd. I now think there is a good chance my father had fxtas. He had some potential phenotype features with prominent ears, and flat feet. Also signs of adhd. I have even wondered if my mother has it on her side or if my father’s father as well as his mother were carriers. All grandparents had normal intelligence but there was a lot of depression, anxiety, alcohol abuse, prominent ears and mood disorders. My son was dx with autism and tested for fx though and the results were described as ‘normal’. We have so many markers though its hard to believe it won’t be present. My cousin’s sons also have learning disabilities and her father was my father’s brother so I suspect my paternal grandmother was a carrier. I just have a feeling it is rife in the family and would not be surprised if I found out 3 grandparents were carriers. My brother seems to have escaped and has no obvious markers which would suggest my mother probably has one fx X and one normal X that he inherited while I likely inherited her fx. She has high blood pressure, varicose veins. I suspect I inherited carrier mutations from both parents.
There’s a huge amount of reverb in the room. When you record your lecture, have the recording device on the table that you’re sitting at
Right, this recording was made 7 yrs ago. There was an issue with the microphones so we had to post it with the audio from the camera itself. Thanks for watching.
No it doesn't have clarity....... simply bla bah blah
Why there are No Dalith politicians in Afghanisthan , Pakisthan, Bangladesh ???? Who is uplifting Dalith lives in Afghanisthan , Pakisthan, Bangladesh ?? Indian daliths should raise voices about survival and status of Dalith lives in Afghanisthan , Pakisthan, Bangladesh
Thanks for this interview. There were many new approaches to something I thought I had understood. Jai Bhim!

This idiot yengde is always in the past talking about dalit vysya caste system. This fool yengde does not know exploitation as he is being again exploited by the abrahmic agenda in harvard. Did he study in India and took use of the reservation given to SC/ST and who funded for his reservation? Who ruled India in last 1000 yrs? Did the brahmins vysya etc ruled India or the muslim and british? Is this caste system amplified by the muslim and british rulers in last 1000 yrs to achieve their goal of converting the non believers and khafirs (hindus)to Islam and christianity? Who wrote ramayan and mahabharat was it written by brahmin ? Did the muslim league use this caste system in partitioning india and the so called dalits did they vote for muslim league ? Where the abrahmic agenda of partitioning India successful with the help of these pawns who play in their hands ? Don't you have poor uneducated people in Europe and America? Do you think they are not exploited by people who are rich? , there are some works which the rich don't want to do, so ultimately that work is done by poor . The british French and Americans and islamic rulers have done pogrom of cultures in the name of paganism, crusades, jihad in last 2000yrs and are the ideal free society now after looting the entire world and they want everyone to forget the past atrocities and this fellow is going and licking the ---- of these abrahmic forces . When you compare the atrocities committed by Christian and islamic forces in name of religion, is the caste system an iota which can be corrected if fools like this fellow work towards it instead of critisizing? This fellow instead of critisizing the caste system should talk about exploitation but after going abroad is a opportunist pawn playing in the hands of abrahmic agenda he should have used his energy in removing vices in indian society . He should have been respected if he had stayed in India and worked towards removing all the exploitation of the poor instead of playing in the hands of Christianity / Islamic agenda. Is Dr suraj biased? Is Dr Suraj not neutral? The upper caste does not have reservation though you find them in high posts. Is it because of their hard work and value for knowledge? Has this fool misunderstood exploitation and keeps ranting discrimination? You go to any part of the world there is exploitation of weak and have nots by those who have , so will he tell there is discrimination in all the world? Ask him who has funded reservations in education and jobs of dalits which they are proud to call themselves as dalits ? As per vedas is a sudra a lazy uneducated bad decision maker, so any one with above quality is a sudra and will he not be exploited by the some learned people in the society ?
Awesome Sunaina
Professor Stroud is awesome

I really can't believe anyone still reads Derrida. I studied with Gayatri Spivak when Derrida was at his peak reputation. She was terrific, for sure, but not even her mesmerizing teaching could make me take this seriously. Read Quine, Russell, and Wittgenstein instead.
Ms. Isabel Wilkerson, thank you for your scholarly work, "Caste," and your lectures that serve to educate us. Please continue to speak truth to power, and I pray that your life is long and continues to bear magnificent fruit.
Thank you so very much. I am very surprised that I am the only commentor for far (2 years later)- this book carries on the work of Dr. Ambedkar from an unique point of view. All India should be benefited to listen to this notable lecture. It seems to me that the Indian media mostly from the middle class and upper middle class (read middle caste and upper caste) still reluctant to address this inhumanity- this will be India's undoing and shame if it wants to be recognized as a world power.

I feel so much dumber for having spent an hour of my life on this trope, wow...........just wow
Yea? Who you rather listen to? Jordan Peterson?
He might have been a "great philosopher" but do we grovel to such obsessive academics?
I've only read one sentence by Derrida. It was: 'This then would have been a novel.' (Or is it 'book'? Something to that effect.) Then I closed the book. But I read various books about him. Also watched him say once that he prayed: 'All the time/' Also some years ago a RUclips where he said deconstructing made him feel guilty. I'm reading when I can Wittgenstein, Boethius and Baudrillard when I read philosophy. Just read Camus's 'The Fall'. All this you can all ignore.
weirdo
I meant not the discussion or whatever on Derrida. I haven't watched the above. But I want to read some of the books he critiques or deconstructs etc. I would like to read his work or some to get some assessment of what he is about via the primary texts. I have read one essay (Differance), have read some Heidegger who I think is interesting. Some of Nietzsche. More recently Boethius and works by Rousseau, the one I liked most so far by the latter was his 'Confessions'. Wittgenstein -- I read his Tractatus. I like the way he questions things continually and poses "dilemmas" or thoughts about thought and language. Also his PI and some of his Foundations of Mathematics. Derrida and W I find fascinating even without reading (almost nothing). But Roland Barhes and again more recently Baudrillard is interesting. All this withoug viewing the video above.

Wow, excuse my ignorace (I'm east African, Cushitic not south Asian btw) but Suraj looks like some people I have seen in my own country‼️ his hair, skin, everything looks like my people. I didn't know India has people who looks like this as well😊
We are one
Excellent.
Jesus. Have you ever seen so much agonizing public speaking anxiety crammed into one event? It’s like… I feel your pain, but I didn’t plan on feeling that much of it when I clicked on this video. “Of Grammatology” is difficult enough as it is without you forcing me to have the flop sweats by proxy twice.
Weird its almost as if bookish, introverted academics are bad at public speaking, hunh... Crazy.

Thank sir, very useful this lecture
"access to intellectual labor" ~ ie the very modus Operandi of socialism ~ has been destroyed by this phrase "It is too much emotional labor to educate you" . I want to go out and do anti-racist work, but since it is "unpaid labor" I guess I don't really have to.
